Coos Art
Museum
Exhibits Ken Means’ Carousel
Sixteen
years ago, artist Ken Means embarked on his dream of carving a carousel and
reviving the tradition of carousel building. This monumental project comes to
life at Coos
Art Museum with nearly two
dozen life size carousel figures. Exquisite horses, the fabled unicorn, a dragon
chariot, playful giraffes, a wolf, goat, rabbit and more will delight, as will
life-size drawings, wood carving tools and ‘works-in-progress.' Opening on
Friday December 7, 2012 with a free public reception from 5 – 7pm and running
through January 26, 2013 the exhibition is certain to touch the child in us all.
Bring your family, friends and neighbors to see these fabulous art exhibitions.
Admission is free for children during the entire exhibition when
accompanied by an adult.
Ken Means’
Carousel is a stunning exhibition of hand carved and painted
carousel figures, which are both works of art and cultural icons. The carousel
represents Means’ vision and painstaking hours of crafting and carving. The
artist now living in Coquille, Oregon began his
career in the early 1960s when he worked as a Hollywood scenic artist and taught
drawing at Pasadena City
College. A man of many
talents Means who began as a painter also taught bronze casting and mold-making
at Otis Parson School of Fine Arts in Los Angeles, California. Means began carving rocking horses
for his daughters which lead to an interest in carving carousel
animals. When Ken
started the craft of carving carousel animals there were no books or teachers
who taught the art of the carousel. He realized that he could help in the
revival of this once-flourishing art. After moving to Oregon in 1985 he began
to teach wood carving workshops. He developed a plan for a 38 figure carousel,
his legacy and the origin for this splendid
exhibition. Coos
Art Museum has been a cultural focal
point of Oregon’s scenic Coast since 1966. It occupies
an historic 1936 Art Deco US Federal Building in downtown Coos Bay. The Museum offers a wide range of
arts activities including exhibitions, art classes and lectures. Hours are
10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Tuesday through Saturday. Museum admission: $5 general, $2
veterans and seniors, and free to all Museum members. Admission for all
children is free. Museum memberships are available
