Albany
Timeline
Boston Mill Society
The Boston Mill Society is working to preserve the Boston/Thompson mill
properties as a center to interpret the agricultural, commercial, industrial,
and social life of Oregon's Willamette Valley. Boston/Thompson Mills is
Oregon's oldest continuously operating water powered mill, one of four
remaining grist mills in the state, and one of only two mills still in
operation. It is an integral part of the history of Linn County and the
Willamette Valley.
Flinn's Dinner
Theater
Located in Historic Downtown Albany, Flinn's
Dinner Theater is a non-profit corporation that creates and produces all of
it's own historical plays. Most of these productions take place in Flinn's
Living History Theater on the second floor of the Historic Flinn Block, West
222 First Ave.
Historic
Flinn Block
The Historic Flinn Block was built in 1887 to house Albany's first bank, the
Albany National Bank. The 5,000 sq. ft. second floor was occupied mostly
by the prominent attorneys in town. When constructed the architects of the
day considered it's cast iron facade to be the best outside of New York.
But, about 1909 a roof fire so weakened the two 30 foot towers on the corners
that it was necessary to remove them.
History
of Albany High School
From a small log cabin to the present brick building of modern architecture, the
youth of this community have come and gone and the educational facilities have
been developed and improved to benefit the young men and women of the classes of
today and tomorrow. On this fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Albany High
School in 1895, it is fitting that we reminisce of the early years and recall
some of the colorful memories that mark Albany's progress in the educational
field.

Montieth
House
The Monteith House, the first frame structure built in Albany in 1849, is one
of the most authentically restored homes in Oregon. It is now a house museum,
where visitors can see the pioneer kitchen Christine Monteith used to prepare
meals or the original piano brought by covered wagon to help make the
wilderness a bit more civilized.
Old
Post Office of Albany
A directorate issued January 8, 1850 established a post office in
Albany, Oregon, with John Burkhart as the first Postmaster. (There
is some dispute about this statement. Some records indicate that
James P. Miller was the first postmaster, but other records show
that he was made Postmaster until January 3, 1852. We are trusting a
letter in our possession from the Washington, DC Post Office
Department dated November 18, 1949 which gives Burkhart precedence.)
The office was located in a store on the north side of West First
Ave.
